Active hydrodynamic cavitation for improving digestion of a waste water plant

Theme
Wastewater Treatment, Innovation / new techniques

Summary
Processing of sewage sludge involves high costs. The improvement of sewage sludge digestion can be increased and the costs of dewatering, storage and sludge disposal can be reduced if the sludge is pre-treated using an energy recovery technology. From literature, many technologies have been investigated ranging from physical pre-treatment techniques such as thermal hydrolysis, cavitation and mechanical technologies to chemical pre-treatment techniques with acid. These technologies show that sludge pre-treatment increases biogas production and reduces the amount of sludge to be disposed. However, there are disadvantages such as high energy consumption, necessary chemicals and unwanted scaling.
The advantage of active hydrodynamic cavitation is that it uses less energy than acoustic and passive hydrodynamic cavitation. Furthermore, it is very suitable for scaling up to any desired flow rate.

Results

When exploring the area of active hydrodynamic cavitation on secondary sludge, various settings have been found that increase methane production. We expect an increase of 10% in methane production. The cavitation area is not yet fully determined, so new settings may result in a bigger effect
The energy cost for VibroCav tool, which uses active hydrodynamic cavitation, is low (according to WhirlWind: 2 kW/m3), which makes this tool very interesting as an alternative to passive cavitation for sludge destruction.
